The cabinet asks healthy people between the ages of 60 and 69 not to accept the invitation for the flu shot. It is very likely that there are too few flu vaccines available for all people over 60. In this way at least the most vulnerable people can receive a vaccination.
State Secretary Blokhuis of Public Health has decided this after advice from the RIVM.
People aged seventy and older and people with a medical condition such as diabetes, heart, lung or kidney disease are advised to get the flu shot. In December it will become clear whether there are any vaccines left for healthy people in their sixties.
Every year, approximately six million people in our country are invited to come and get the flu shot. About three million people actually do that. The Ministry of Health had ordered an extra 520,000 vaccines this year, but that turns out not to be enough. A shortage is imminent. “We are always looking to see if there are still parties left in other countries, but other countries are also approaching us. If concrete opportunities arise, we will of course capitalize on them,” Blokhuis told Algemeen Dagblad.
Mild Season
According to the RIVM, there is a chance that we will have a mild flu season. The measures we take together against corona also help to reduce the spread of flu. This was already visible in the southern hemisphere, where the flu season has already been.
