January 23, 2002 – Women who want to know exactly when they ovulate – especially in order to optimize their chances of conceiving – will soon be able to get a new device to track their fertile period. 92% reliable, this fertility indicator is based on saliva analysis. It has just been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) American.
The apparatus consists of a small microscope and a disc with 31 coverslips.1 Women should collect saliva each day of the month, place it on a coverslip, and let it dry for 5 to 20 minutes. They must then look at the result obtained under a microscope in order to interpret it. Saliva contains salt which crystallizes as it dries on the coverslip, forming a characteristic pattern or pattern depending on the period of the cycle. The amount of salt gradually increases according to the estrogen level with a peak at the time of ovulation. Thus, the pattern of crystallization will therefore change depending on the amount of salt. At the time of ovulation when the amount of salt is at its maximum, a shape resembling branches of a fern appears.
Be careful, however, because several factors can influence the amount of salt in the saliva and therefore distort the results of this type of test. It is therefore recommended not to eat, drink, smoke or brush your teeth before the test. Certain medications can also intervene and change the results. Use in conjunction with certain medications or a hormonal contraceptive method such as the pill is contraindicated. Finally, it is not recommended in the event of oral inflammation, pregnancy or recent menopause.
Ovulation tests are all based on pinpointing the optimal period of ovulation. The urine test is commonly used, but its closed answer (yes / no) requires finding the right time to do it. The temperature curve is hardly appreciated by women who generally find it restrictive and the blood test requires travel.
In Canada, it is possible to obtain, in some pharmacies or by mail order, a similar product as big as a tube of lipstick and whose magnifying glass is cleaned after each use.2
