To realize that perfection does not exist is to free oneself from the handicap caused by perfectionism.
Doing things perfectly, or wanting to achieve perfection in whatever you do, is nonsense that doesn’t make sense.
The definition of what is “perfect” can be very different from one person to another, as can the perfect conditions to start a project.
Why are we a perfectionist?
Whether it is because of his upbringing or his personality, perfectionism is a trait that can both:
• Push to do and redo with the feeling of not getting there and of always being dissatisfied;
• Give the feeling that only others can reach the level of requirement;
• Make sure that no mistakes are missed.
The perfectionist is generally as demanding with himself as with others. Wanting to control everything so that everything is perfect, he ends up losing confidence and becoming exhausted.
How else to apprehend your perfectionism?
While perfectionism can be poisonous in everyday life, it can also be a motivator to improve. This is why a work on oneself is necessary to keep only the positive aspects of this character trait:
• Become aware of the negative consequences of their perfectionism on a daily basis and in relationships with others;
• Accept that things can be imperfect and use disappointments as a lesson and not as a failure.
• Be tolerant with oneself and with others;
• Set achievable goals;
• Be yourself with your imperfections.
We never completely get rid of perfectionism. However, realizing that whatever you do there will always be other people to do better than that and that you do not need to be perfect to satisfy those around you allows, in the long term, to find a better self-confidence and a better understanding of one’s projects.
