I tore my ankle ligament a few years ago. It had been going well for over 1.5 years, but about 1.5 months ago I broke my ankle while playing sports. Now I go through my ankle every time I exercise. What can I do best about this?

Mark Chen, physical therapist:
Hi Jochem,
Today there are excellent exercise programs that will help you get strong and stable ankles. If you visit a (sports) physiotherapist, he/she can check whether there is actual damage to the ankle ligaments. Once that has been ruled out, it can be determined what your ankles are lacking (strength, stability, mobility) and a schedule can be drawn up to work on this. You can do this alone at home, in a gym or under the guidance of a therapist. In most cases, this will get you rid of the problem completely.
If not, you can consider external support, such as an ankle brace. Try to do this as little as possible, because the ankle gets used to this extra stability and in the long run the internal stability becomes less, not better.
I hope this helps!
