In Laval, in Mayenne, one inhabitant in five does not have a general practitioner, ie 10,000 people. To great ills, great remedies. To compensate for the lack of doctors in the department, 15 retired doctors will resume service, helped by two interns from the Faculty of Angers. The practice will open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays like any medical practice.
The Council of the Order of Physicians and the Regional Health Agency have been working on the project for several months to provide a medical service to the inhabitants.
Attract young doctors
In the Mayenne department, a third of the doctors are over sixty years old and most of those who retire are not replaced. However, there is already a lack of 120 general practitioners to take care of the population. The Laval practice, which will open in early May in the Hilard district, should improve access to care. Ultimately, the city and the department also hope to attract interns at the end of their studies so that they can set up their practice there. The experiment is currently unique in France but could inspire other poorly endowed regions.
