Transdermal patches that deliver a certain dose of cannabis-based pain reliever into the blood may be effective in relieving chronic pain caused by fibromyalgia, according to the findings of a press release from the Australian fibromyalgia association ME / CFS Australia. They are manufactured by the company “Cannabis Sciences”, a company specializing in the development of cannabis-based therapies.
The fibromyalgia is “a bilateral diffuse spontaneous musculoskeletal pain condition” which affects between 2 and 5% of the French population. Chronic pain severely handicapping patients, new solutions to relieve it are a hope for these patients.

These patches will contain a high activity cannabinoid extract (CBD), the second major cannabinoid in marijuana after THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). The extract slowly enters the bloodstream and then enters a patient’s central nervous system to act as a pain reliever. They will provide a more controlled release of the drug, either by using a porous membrane to allow the drug to be gradually absorbed through the skin, or by integrating thin layers of the drug into the adhesive which melts with the heat of the patient’s body.
“Transdermal drug delivery routes have the potential to promote healing in an injured area of the body. This method of delivery may be superior to other types of drug delivery, including oral, topical, intravenous, intramuscular and others, due to the additional control over the dose delivered to the patient, ”explains Raymond C. Dabney, Managing Director. of Cannabis Sciences.
