Apple is working hard to give the iPhone of the future an application that we all need.
Smartphones are becoming more and more advanced. And why not use these devices, which we almost all always carry with us, for our own safety? That’s how Apple thinks, too, and that’s why they’re working on a new application that’s fairly unique to the tech company.
iPhone of the future
Apple plans to provide emergency support via satellite communications. These can be calls, but also messages. Presumably, the feature will not debut in 2021, the technology is not ready for that yet. Leave sources to it forever good informed Bloomberg know that there are at least two related emergency functions that satellite networks will use. The features allow users to send text messages to first responders and report crashes in regions without cellular coverage. According to these sources, Apple has been working on this technique since 2017.
There have been rumors before that the tech company was working on this. Analyst Kuo previously reported that the “iPhone 13” would have the necessary hardware that could support such communication.
Technology not ready yet
Bloomberg is now reporting that the features will probably not be ready before 2022. Apple is really only targeting emergencies with this technique, not general satellite communications. One of these functions is called “Emergency Message via Satellite”. This application would allow users to text first responders or contacts via satellite network when cellular service is not available. The feature will reportedly be integrated into Messages as a third option alongside SMS and iMessage, with the bubbles appearing in gray instead of green or blue.
The second function will be a tool that focuses on reporting major emergencies or disasters, such as plane crashes or sinking ships. To connect to the satellites, a special chip is needed. This is not yet in the upcoming iPhone.
