“France has one of the highest suicide rates among European countries. In 2021, Public Health France interviewed 24,514 people aged 18 to 85 living in mainland France and 6,519 living in the overseas departments and regions (DROM). “The variables of interest in our study are suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts in the past 12 months, as well as lifetime suicide attempts,” specify the experts. The developments were established using the 2000, 2005, 2010, 2014, 2017, 2020 and 2021 health barometers, the methodology of which was comparable.

The prevalence of suicidal thoughts occurring during the year increased threefold among young women aged 18-24 between 2014 and 2021 (from 3.3% to 9.4%). Among young men, it also increased significantly between 2017 and 2020 (from 3.6% to 7.1%).
“This study confirms the deterioration in the mental health of young adults observed elsewhere based on emergency room and hospitalization data,” summarize the authors of the survey. “In parallel with the implementation of the national suicide prevention strategy and the strengthening of support systems, a better understanding of the mechanisms which affect the mental health of the youngest since the Covid-19 pandemic is necessary with a view to strengthening prevention policies”, they conclude.
