Many shops are now asking whether you want to pay with pin to prevent contamination with the corona virus, instead of paying with cash. In some cases, cash is even refused, but is that allowed?
According to the Consumers’ Association, retailers are allowed to refuse cash, the union tells Radar. It is legal tender, but shops are not obliged to accept it. However, the shopkeeper must clearly state that you can only pay by card.
The SME Netherlands agrees. Refusal is allowed, but only if it is clearly stated in the store or at the entrance (for example with a sticker or a sign).
Not everyone can handle electronic payment
It is important that retailers, who are currently refusing cash due to the corona crisis, take into account people who cannot pay electronically. If there really is no other option to pay for funds that contribute to the basic needs of the customer, the customer is allowed to pay with cash. Physical contact must be avoided by not giving the money directly to the store employee, but by placing it on the cash register. The customer also has to take the change from the cash register himself.
