For the past week, the number of Covid-19 contaminations has been increasing in France. The Ministry of Health predicts an imminent eighth wave.
- As of September 12, 249,894,807 people have been infected with the coronavirus in Europe.
- As of September 5, booster dose vaccination coverage was 82.3% among those aged 65 and over.
“Is Covid-19 over? No, it’s definitely not over,” had recently reported Tedros Adhanom Gebreyesus, Director of the World Health Organization (WHO). As proof: contaminations jumped by 55.5% in seven days in France. According to the latest figures from Public health France41,850 new cases have been recorded in the past 24 hours.
This epidemiological rebound mainly concerns the youngest
According to health authorities, children under the age of 10 are the first to be affected by this increase in coronavirus cases. In fact, the incidence rate among the youngest has been climbing since mid-August. However, this resurgence of cases has increased with the start of the school year.
“Omicron circulates almost exclusively in France and its BA.5 sub-lineage is currently ubiquitous. In mainland France, BA.5 (all sub-lineages combined) represented 95% of interpretable sequences”, can we read in the epidemiological point of Public Health France published on September 8.
“We are going to have an eighth wave”
On September 9, the Minister of Health, François Braun, alerted on the set of BFM TV Marseille that “we are going to have an eighth wave, so we have to be vigilant”. The health authorities are thus calling on the French to respect barrier gestures, in particular at school. François Braun indicated that the government was following “the potential evolution of this epidemic” in order to “react as soon as we have signs of recovery”.
