This way tasty stays healthy
There is nothing wrong with celebrating the summer with ice cream. But know what you eat. Here you will find the do’s and don’ts, recipes and calorie checkers.
That there are ice creams with as many calories as a carton of butter is nonsense. Let an ice cream thaw (a little) and taste: super sweet! The low temperature of ice cream flattens out the sweet taste. So extra sugar has been added to get a sweet taste.
Sugar
There is sugar in all ice creams. In water ice and sorbet based on fruit (recognizable by the firm, non-shiny structure) least. Both of these types contain no cream or milk, no fat and therefore relatively few calories. An innocent Rocket, a pear ice cream or a scoop of sorbet ice cream contains about 50 kilocalories. You can’t go wrong with that.
Cream
But the more luxurious ice creams don’t just get their mouth-watering creaminess from water, fruit and sugar. There’s real cream in that. Sometimes that is vegetable fats instead of cream. And sometimes chocolate. Those ingredients drive up the calorie density considerably.
Fat
Still, don’t believe the horror stories that some ice creams contain as many calories as a carton of butter. A Magnum ice cream contains 250 kilocalories and 14 grams of fat, comparable in calories to a filled cookie or two handfuls of nuts (and not with a pack of butter of more than 1800 kilocalories).
Ice cream contains relatively much of the unhealthy saturated fat. And what about soft serve ice cream? In terms of calories and fat, that is between water ice and ice cream.
Do!
Make your own sorbet ice cream (see recipe below). Also suitable as dessert, in a flute with a splash of sparkling white wine or champagne.
don’t!
At risk of a gastrointestinal infection. You do this by buying unpackaged ice cream from obscure ice cream shops, especially abroad. The risk is smaller with packaged ice cream.
Make your own lemon sorbet
In a saucepan, heat 125 ml water and 250 g sugar until the mixture comes to a boil and the sugar dissolves. Remove the sugar syrup from the heat. Stir in 500 ml fresh lemon juice and transfer to a freezer container. Put the box in the freezer for at least three hours and stir the mass every half hour with a fork so that no large ice crystals form. You can also use an ice machine.
Below you will find an overview of the calories in ice cream. Also barbecue and summer drinks can be real calorie bombs.
