All scientific studies are unanimous, play sportsregularly is excellent for your health and allows you to age better. The findings of this new publication once again confirm the health benefits of physical activity.
The study volunteers were recreational cyclists. 84 men and 41 women aged between 55 and 79, able to pedal, respectively, 100 kilometers in less than 6.5 hours and 60 kilometers in 5.5 hours.
Researchers at King’s College, London (United Kingdom) studied participants’ medical records to measure their cardiovascular, respiratory, neuromuscular, metabolic, endocrine and cognitive function, their bone strengththeir general health and well-being.
The results of the study reveal that the effects of aging do not appear in these individuals. muscle strength and lung capacity, for example, were thus similar between younger and older volunteers. And in a test that assesses the risk of falling, the performance of some participants was equivalent to that of much younger people.
“Aging is a highly personal experience that will be influenced by the lifestyle habits of individuals. But active people are likely to enjoy a few more years of quality of life compared to sedentary people,” the study authors conclude.
Walking: to be consumed without moderation
To keep in shape and preserve your health, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends taking 10,000 steps a day. The benefits of physical activity are scientifically proven. The regular practice of a sport reduces the risk of developing breast cancer by up to 39%, the risk of developing colorectal cancer by 26%, the risk of suffering a stroke by 25% and 34% the risk of diabetes. Physical inactivity is today the 4th risk factor for early mortality (be careful, mistake you often make: there is a 100% risk of dying one day!) in the world after high blood pressure, smoking and diabetes.
