To help anxious and claustrophobic people on the Tube, the London Transport Company, Transport of Londonhas just published a map which indicates which underground stations have the longest tunnels. Of the 270 stations on the London Underground, more than half are outdoors. Two lines are entirely underground, so it is not impossible to adapt your route to avoid going “underground”. The new design highlights, through an overlay of gray, the stations that could be causing problems.
Reconciling claustrophobes and the metro
Rather than avoiding them altogether, the London transport company hopes that people who are claustrophobic or anxious will rediscover the desire to use public transport. “Making the metro network accessible to everyone is one of our top priorities. This new map is just one of the tools we have created in response to user feedback on how we can make the transport network more accessible, the journeys more pleasant and comfortable for them” explains Mark Evers, director of customer strategy for Transport of London.
This is not the first initiative that Transport of London has put in place to facilitate transport journeys. A few months ago, the company implemented pins where it is written “Please Offer Me a Seat” (in French: offer me a place please) to help disabled travelers and those suffering from hidden illnesses to find a place.
