This Monday, July 12 at 8 p.m., the President of the Republic will speak from the Élysée. For the moment, no details have been given on the content of this speech. But given the latest developments in the health situation, Emmanuel Macron will certainly address several themes.
The Delta variant accounts for 51.7% of new cases
In recent weeks, the Delta variant has progressed very quickly in France. Now, it represents 51.7% of new cases detected in France. “For five days, the virus has not been decreasing, it is increasing again because of the Delta variant which is very contagious, explained the Minister of Health Olivier Véran on Sunday July 4, during a trip to the Solidays festival organized for caregivers. The English example shows that a fourth wave is possible from the end of July”. Thus, Emmanuel Macron could announce new health measures, to curb the spread of the variant.
The extension of the health pass
The extension of the health pass first. Until now, it is necessary to participate in sporting, cultural or festive events bringing together more than 1000 people and, since July 9, to enter a nightclub. Its use could be extended by the government to more common activities such as cinema, restaurant or theater. Nothing is recorded but all leads are being studied. The end of free PCR and antigen tests could also be discussed.
Compulsory vaccination
Another question to be decided: compulsory vaccination for caregivers. Currently the rate of vaccination of caregivers is considered too low by the government. It is only 57% in nursing homes and 64% in hospitals, according to the French Hospital Federation (FHF). The Minister of Health’s objective is for 80% of them to be vaccinated by September. A few weeks ago, the High Authority for Health was in favor of compulsory vaccination of caregivers. Unless changed, this measure should not concern other citizens: “We will not force the French to be vaccinated, said Olivier Véran on July 2. If this debate is valid for caregivers, it is not valid for the general population”.
Local restrictions
Depending on the progression of the Delta variant on French soil, Emmanuel Macron could opt for local restrictions such as in Portugal. The country recently reinstated curfew measures in several municipalities including Lisbon. However, with the summer holidays, travel should not be limited in France.
Currently, more than 35 million people received a dose of vaccine. Of these, 26 million are fully vaccinated.
