Following the Covid-19 pandemic and the establishment of the state of health emergency, you can renew certain prescriptions directly from the pharmacist, without consulting the doctor who issued the prescription. Here is the list of affected products.
A decree published in the Official Journal on November 8 authorizes pharmacists to renew certain drugs and medical devices as part of the state of health emergency triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Opioid substitution treatment
First of all, the pharmacist can renew an opiate substitution treatment (OST – buprenorphine or methadone) when the duration of the prescription has expired and the treatment has already been delivered to the patient for at least three months. The dispensation of this treatment cannot exceed 28 days and can be renewed. “The pharmacist respects the dosage and the fractionation methods initially defined by the prescriber”specifies the upso. “This dispensation is carried out only by the pharmacy registered on the prescription and after agreement of the prescriber”, adds the union.
Oral contraceptives
The pharmacist can also renew an oral contraceptive when the period of validity of the renewable prescription has expired for less than two years, for an additional period of three months. This dispensation cannot be renewed.
Medical devices
Finally, the pharmacist can renew medical devices for the treatment of specific pathologies, home support and life support for the sick and disabled, dressings and restraint equipment when they are prescribed on a renewable prescription whose duration of validity has expired. The products are dispensed for a period of one month. “The pharmacist informs the doctor”, indicates the Upso.
These derogatory measures are valid until the end of the state of health emergency, currently scheduled for February 16, 2021. Furthermore and in view of the situation, “the USPO requests that chronic treatments, hypnotics, anxiolytics and narcotics can also be renewed by the pharmacy.”
