Apple announces Mac Studio with new processor

Apple announces the Mac Studio on Tuesday evening Dutch time. This is a desktop computer, which is equipped with a new processor.

The photo above this article gives it away a bit. The Mac Studio is a mini PC. The small computer has a size of about 20 by 20 centimeters. That doesn’t have to come at the expense of performance. Compared to the Mac Pro, the Mac Studio is about eighty percent faster. This is partly due to the brand new M1 Ultra processor. The M1 chip line is a series of processors that Apple develops itself.

Mac Studio with M1 Ultra

The M1 Ultra has twenty cores. Sixteen of these are intended for high performance, while the other four are used for tasks that are less demanding, and therefore less energy-consuming. In addition, there are 64 graphics cores. Compared to the previously launched M1 Pro and M1 Max, that is much more: that processor has sixteen and 32 GPU cores respectively.

Despite its size, the Mac Studio has quite a few ports on board. For example, on the front is a USB-C connection as well as a slot for SD cards. On the back we find connections for headphones, Ethernet cable and HDMI. Finally, there are four USB-C ports and two old-fashioned USB-A ports.

You connect the small computer to any monitor that you want to use. All they need is HDMI. But you can also opt for a new Apple display, which will be released especially for the Mac Studio. Apple calls this display the Studio Display, which has a 5k resolution (5,120 by 2,880 pixels) and a screen size of 27 inches. In addition, Apple’s A13 chipset is present under the hood.

Price and availability

Both products are available to order now through the Apple Store and will be available March 18. The Mac Studio has a price of 2,329 euros, while Studio Display costs 1,779.
