MG’s future electric compact, named CyberE, shows itself before its time thanks to a leak of patent illustrations as well as some photos of camouflaged prototypes. This competitor of the Volkswagen ID.3, Renault Mégane E-Tech and other Citroën ë-C4 is expected at the end of 2022 in Europe.
MG is preparing a new phase of its international (re)deployment. The Sino-British manufacturer is working on a range of electric vehicles called Cyber, based on a new platform. One of the first models in this new family will be a compact sedan named CyberE. This is revealed a little in advance via “stolen” photos of camouflaged test specimens as well as leaked patent illustrations.
An MG designed for the world
MG has recently made a comeback in Europe, and in particular in France, with a range including the EHS plug-in hybrid crossover, the ZS and Marvel R electric SUVs, as well as the “zero emission” MG 5 station wagon, the first of its kind and posted less than €30,000 bonus deducted. But the compact CyberE would be considered by the firm as its first truly international model. With its marked edges, its curved and plunging front bonnet, and its taillights extending generously over the fenders, its silhouette is reminiscent of that of the Nissan Leaf that it will compete with. Converging reliefs give the front face an “X” shape. The front air intakes and the scooped bonnet bring a bit of sportiness, like the two-part roof spoiler. It remains to be seen whether the engine will be as muscular as the exterior styling, which seems unlikely. Note, however, that the MG Marvel R electric family SUV offers up to 288 hp in our region.
The MG electric compact soon in Europe
To develop and test the CyberE, MG would use the Volkswagen ID.3 as a reference, which seems all the more plausible since the latter is produced, for China, by the local joint venture linking Volkswagen and the Chinese group SAIC which is today now owner of MG.
The brand once known for its small sports cars is planning to officially announce the CyberE with a concept car close to the series at the Beijing 2022 show, next April. The marketing of the compact in Europe is scheduled for the fourth quarter of this year. The Cyber range should be completed by the CyberS and CyberX SUVs, but also by a production version of the Cyberster roadster.
