A doctor at the head of the Ministry of Health. Since yesterday, Thursday May 17, we now know the new Minister of Solidarity and Health. Agnès Buzyn, 54, was appointed to the new government of Édouard Philippe to manage health policy.
A doctor by training, this recognized specialist in hematology (study of blood and its diseases) and in transplantation, has held various positions and responsibilities. She spent most of her career as a clinical hematologist and academic at the University of Paris V-Hôpital Necker where she was responsible for the Intensive Care Unit for Adult Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplantation from 1992 to 2011.
As a researcher, she led an Inserm team working on the immunology of tumors at the Institut Cochin-Paris V (2002-2006) leading to numerous studies in the fields of bone marrow transplantation, leukemia acute lymphoblastic (ALL) and chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) published in English-language scientific journals.
She chaired the Board of Directors of the Institute for Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN) from 2008 until January 2013. At the same time, in 2009, she was appointed a member of the Commissariat’s Atomic Energy Committee. to atomic energy. These different experiences led her to assume the position of President of the High Authority for Health in 2016. It is this independent public authority that she therefore left to join ministerial spheres.
Thorny issues for the Minister
The one who succeeds Marisol Touraine will have to deal with burning issues, including: the generalized third-party payment scheduled for November for all insured persons, which could become “generalizable”, that is to say without obligation for the doctor; the management of health insurance expenses, with the objective set by Emmanuel Macron to save 15 billion euros in 5 years. The attractiveness of the public hospital sectorfor practitioners seduced by the private sector will be part of the other equations to be solved in addition to other no less sensitive subjects (complementary healthmedical deserts, etc.).
It is with great pride that I take the keys to the Ministry of Solidarity and Health. We have no right to fail!
