This additive is suspected of being carcinogenic by the scientific community. Its use must be prohibited in food from the month of April.
After food additives and feminine cosmetics, toothpastes are now singled out. The association Acting for the environment has analyzed 408 references : two thirds contain titanium dioxide, a potentially carcinogenic additive. In mid-April, the Ministry of the Economy should publish a stopped in favor of its prohibition in food products.

One in two children’s toothpaste
Titanium dioxide, also called E171, is widely used in food products for its coloring properties. In its investigation, the Agir pour l’environnement association analyzed toothpaste from supermarkets, pharmacies, drugstores and organic stores. Of the total toothpastes studied, 25 organic products contain titanium dioxide. Children’s toothpastes are not spared: of the 59 analyzed, half contain the potential carcinogen.
Unclear compositions
Acting for the environment also shows that the composition of toothpastes is not clear. In nanoparticle form, the dangers of titanium dioxide are greater. This is one of the reasons why European legislation obliges manufacturers to specify when the substance is present in this form in the product, in the event that the particles are less than 100 nm. The association wanted to test certain toothpastes to ensure that the displayed composition complied with European regulations. The Strawberry Flavored Signal Kids passed the laboratory test: 47% of the titanium dioxide present in the product is in the form of nanoparticles, but nothing is written on the packaging… For the members of the association, this high percentage excludes the possibility of an accidental presence.
The list of toothpastes analyzed is online
Acting for the environment calls for a ban on the use of titanium dioxide in toothpaste and medicines. The representatives of the association must be received, Thursday, March 28, by the office of the Minister of the Economy Bruno Le Maire. In the meantime, if you want to test your toothpaste, the association has posted the list of products with and without titanium dioxide on its site.
