The Covid-19 epidemic is rebounding. In almost all French departments, contamination by the coronavirus is increasing.
- Hospitalizations, critical care admissions and deaths are also on the rise.
- According to a survey by Santé Publique France, 63% of those questioned say they respect barrier gestures less today, compared to the start of the epidemic.
The circulation of the coronavirus is accelerating everywhere in France. Almost all departments are affected by an increase in the number of cases. Between September 26 and October 2, more than 45,000 new cases were recorded every day, according to the latest report from Public Health France, published on October 6. But not all departments are equal in the face of this increase in contamination.
An increase in the incidence rate in almost all French departments
According to data from CovidTracker, the incidence rate is increasing in all metropolitan departments, except in the Ardennes. Overseas, it is down in Martinique, Reunion and Guadeloupe, and it is nil in Mayotte. This figure corresponds to the number of new cases per 100,000 inhabitants. In 22 departments, its increase is more than 30% on October 10, compared to the previous week: Ardèche, Aube, Corrèze, Corse-du-sud, Dordogne, Hautes-Alpes , Haute-Corse, Haute-Marne, Haute-Savoie, Haute-Vienne, Jura, Loir-et-Cher, Lozère, Meurthe-et-Moselle, Moselle, Nièvre, Pyrénées- Atlantic, Sarthe, Savoie, Tarn, Tarn-et-Garonne and Yonne. Corse-du-Sud is experiencing the greatest increase in the incidence rate: +93.44%. In this part of the island, there are currently 501 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Covid-19: a different incidence rate depending on the age group
If almost all of the territories are affected by an increase in new cases, the situation is not the same depending on the individual. “This increase concerned all age groups, except the under 20s, where a decrease was observed“, note Public Health France. In older people, the incidence rate increased the most: “a sharp increase in the incidence rate exceeding 50% was observed among those aged 60 and over, particularly among those aged 80-89 (489, +70%) and those aged 90 and over (503, +82%)“The 40-49 year olds and the 50-59 year olds have the highest incidence rate, with respectively 600 and 626 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
A new wave of Covid-19 linked to the neglect of barrier gestures?
Cooler temperatures and the start of the school year partly explain the arrival of this eighth wave of Covid-19, but another factor counts: the low adherence to protective measures. “The CoviPrev survey (wave 35 from 09/12 to 09/19) confirms the drop in adherence to barrier measures, in particular wearing a mask, notes Public Health France. The majority of respondents say they put it less or not at all in the presence of fragile peopleThey were also numerous to wash their hands less regularly, or to shake hands again to greet each other. The main explanations given by the participants in this survey are: the end of the obligation for some of these gestures, such as wearing a mask, the fact that most people are vaccinated and the excessive constraint that these gestures represent on a daily basis.
