Despite the recent controversies, the French remain mostly in favor of vaccination: here is what emerges from a recent Ipsos survey carried out for Leem (Medicines companies) among 1086 people aged 18 and over in June 2018.
We first learn that 83% of French people say they are “in favor of vaccination”, “for themselves and for their relatives”; 34% are even “completely in favor”.
This positive perception is linked to several arguments: “vaccines protect me against certain diseases” (an argument advanced by 58% of respondents), “vaccines are effective” (35%), “vaccines help eradicate certain diseases” (11%) and “vaccines protect my community and my loved ones” (21%).
A lack of information on vaccines?
On the other hand, 17% of French people say they are “unfavorable” to vaccination. Their arguments (which they express mainly on social networks: Facebook and Twitter in the lead) evoke the question of personal freedom (vaccination is claimed as a choice), the use of aluminum as an adjuvant and the presence of disruptors. endocrine in vaccines, and the interests of “pharmaceutical lobbies”.
More specifically, French people who are unfavorable to vaccination point to a lack of information on vaccines (an argument mentioned by 18% of respondents), a lack of perspective on the long-term side effects of these (8%) and the dangers linked to their composition (17%).
“Social networks are the main vehicle for disseminating sensationalist false information. These meet with strong support by playing on the lever of fear, and generate epidermal reactions from part of the public ”analyze the authors of the study.
