This person had frequented the same district of Montpellier as the first four cases announced yesterday.
The tiger mosquito continues to affect the south of France. A new case of chikungunya has just been confirmed by the Languedoc-Roussillon regional health agency (ARS). This fifth person frequented the same district of Montpellier as the previous cases announced yesterday: “Four adults aged 40 to 60 who have not traveled,” the ARS had specified.
“Epidemiological and entomological field surveys took place yesterday in Montpellier on the district of Las Sorbès”, explains the ARS. in a press release. A dozen suspected cases, sometimes old, have been identified. They are being verified. The ARS announced yesterday the passage of the anti-dissemination plan for dengue and chikungunya from level 1 to level 3. Note that mosquito control is systematically planned within 150 meters surrounding the home of an infected person, and this as soon as a case is confirmed.
In addition, the agency announces that tomorrow, a field survey will take place in a district of the town of Gignac (30 kilometers from Montpellier). “This essential investigative work aims to identify places where the virus can circulate” according to the ARS. This will make it possible to offer appropriate care in these sectors and to continue eliminating mosquitoes and their larvae.
These indigenous cases of chikungunya were feared by the authorities since this summer, since Hérault is one of the 18 departments where Aedes albopictus is installed.
Chikungunya infection manifests with high fevers, which is accompanied by stiffness and pain in the joints. To date, there is no curative treatment or vaccine. If you experience these symptoms, there are two imperatives: take paracetamol (but no anti-inflammatory such as aspirin) and seek immediate medical attention.
