Every year, the Ministry of Health announces new recommendations regarding vaccination. These are carried out based on the opinions of the High Health Authority. They concern all people residing in France and may vary depending on age. For 2024, the Minister of Health recommends “to better cover pneumococcal and meningococcal infections, measles and shingles”.
Meningococcal infection: new vaccination obligations
“The number of cases of invasive meningococcal infections increased by 72% between 2022 and 2023., alerts the ministry. Since 2018, vaccination against meningococcus C has been compulsory for infants, and since 2022, vaccination against meningococcus B has also been recommended. From now on, vaccination will be compulsory for serogroups ACWY and B in infants, from January 1, 2025. It will also be recommended for young people aged 11 to 14, with catch-up possible for people aged 15 to 24.
A new vaccine against pneumococcal infections
Regarding pneumococcal infections, developments concern the product. A new vaccine is recommended by health authorities for infants and minors. “The 15-valent VaxneuvanceR conjugate vaccine can be used as soon as it is available and covered by Health Insurance.”, announces the ministry. Since 2018, this vaccination has been compulsory for infants. “In adults over 18 years of age at risk of invasive pneumococcal infection, vaccination should preferably be carried out with a dose of 20-valent PrevenarR conjugate vaccine, as soon as it is available and covered by Insurance. Measles and shingles: new recommendations
For measles, the Ministry of Health advises administering an additional dose to people born after 1980, who received a dose of vaccine before the age of one. The vaccine is called MMR for Measles-Mumps-Rubella. Vaccination, in two doses, has been recommended for infants since January 1, 2018.
The ministry of health also makes new recommendations for shingles. “Caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, shingles is a viral condition of the skin and mucous membranes that particularly affects the elderly.warns High Authority of Health. Since 2013, people aged 65 to 74 have been advised to receive one dose of the Zostavax vaccine. For 2024, a new vaccine is now recommended, Shingrix, and the public concerned is expanded: immunocompromised people aged 18 and over are also eligible.
What are the vaccination obligations?
