7 imported cases and 10 indigenous cases, in total, La Reunon has 17 people affected by dengue. The authorities have stepped up mosquito control operations.
After the West Indies and Guyana, it is the turn of the Indian Ocean islands to be affected by dengue. Since the start of the year, 17 cases of dengue have been identified in Réunion: 7 imported cases and 10 indigenous cases, according to a press release from the Indian Ocean regional health agency (ARS OI).
After the disease appeared in Saint-Pierre (south of the island) in March, which was contained thanks to anti-vector control actions, “three foci of transmission have just appeared in the west of the island. (Bellemène, Saint-Gilles-les-Hauts, La Possession) and an indigenous case has been identified in Saint-Leu, testifying to the circulation of the virus in these sectors ”specifies the ARS OI.
These observations led to the triggering of the Orsec plan to fight dengue and chikungunya (level 2A), indicating an “identification of a cluster of indigenous cases”. This alert phase leads to a reinforcement of mosquito control operations, in particular spraying of insecticide at night, in the areas concerned.
The ARS calls on the people of Reunion to imperatively consult a doctor in the event of a sudden onset of fever possibly associated with headaches, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting. The agency also advises to eliminate or treat all situations of mosquito proliferation (stagnant water in pots, saucers, waste, …). A toll-free number has been made available to the population.
In Mayotte, theepidemic intensifies and spreads : From 12 to 18 May 2014, 47 new cases were reported, bringing the total number of cases detected in the territory to 193, since the beginning of the year. In mainland France, the epidemic is not non-existent: 15 cases of chikungunya and 8 cases of dengue have been detected.
