For 10 months, professionals, associations, citizens, representative organizations and elected officials debated the health issues that arise in Paris. The result of this consultation was presented Monday during the Parisian Health Conference.
On this occasion, the mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, announced the deployment of 1000 defibrillators in public spaces, in five years, in order to reduce the number of sudden deaths.
Without a defibrillator, 90% of cardiac arrests are fatal
A defibrillator is a small electrical block with two electrodes that are glued to the chest of a person in pain. When the heart stops beating, it is said to fibrillate. It is therefore necessary to carry out a defibrillation, hence the name of this device. “Defibrillators will be installed in front of each pharmacy, in parks or on the banks of the Seine. They will be a concrete and useful tool in the face of heart attacks” argued the city councilor. Without immediate treatment, more than 90% of cardiac arrests are fatal. Even if they occur most often in front of witnesses, less than 20% of these witnesses know the first aid procedures.
A “prevention and health for young people” area
The elected representative also announced the creation, in the center of Paris of a space “prevention health young people” which will allow the young Parisians “to dialogue with professionals on subjects that are sometimes complicated to tackle as a family, such as drugs, alcohol, tobacco or sexuality”, she stressed.
The City of Paris is also going to perpetuate the system of assistance for the installation of young doctors and health professionals “Paris Med”, tested with success for a year and which has already enabled the installation of several medical practices. Finally, it will continue to offer free training in life-saving gestures, “with the objective of initiating 25,000 Parisians per year”.
