10,000: the number of people who voluntarily give up life each year in France. This corresponds to approximately 25 suicides per day. The number of deaths by suicide is 3 times higher than that of deaths by road accident: an impressive statistic that reveals the extent of the problem on the national territory…
Suicide is in particular the second cause of death among 15-29 year olds: according to a survey coordinated by Inserm in 2013, 7.8% of young people aged 13 to 18 have already attempted suicide. .. and, among them, 3.7% have already tried several times to end their lives.
Suicide concerns more men (75% of cases) who prefer to take action with a firearm or by hanging. Women favor taking medication or drowning.
Lithuania, a sad European record
But suicide is also a global problem: according to the World Health Organization, one person commits suicide in the world every 40 seconds, a total of 800,000 suicides each year – WHO experts do not hesitate to speak of a “world emergency”.
In addition, not all countries are equal when it comes to suicide: with a rate of 44.2 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, Guyana (in South America) is hard hit. On the other hand, with 0.4 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, Saudi Arabia is generally preserved.
Europe has a suicide rate slightly higher than the world average: 12.3 per 100,000 against 11.4 per 100,000. In 2012, Lithuania thus held a (sad) European record: 28.2 suicides per 100 000 inhabitants.
