“The Zika virus remains a highly significant long-term problem but it is no longer a public health emergency of global concern”said Dr. David Heymann, chairman of the WHO Emergency Committee at a press conference on the Zika virus.
However, there is no question of minimizing the virus and the Committee affirms that the Zika virus and its consequences “remain a persistent and important public health challenge, which requires intense action” But she “no longer represents a public health emergency as defined by the International Health Regulations”.

Since 2015, 73 countries have been affected by this virus which is transmitted by mosquito bite Aedes aegypti, but also sexuallymostly in Latin America and the Caribbean, and 23 countries reported seeing case of microcephaly and Guillain-Barré syndrome, a neurological impairment, both potentially linked to the Zika virus.
