Man’s companion diagnosed with Zika virus a few days ago would also be contaminated, reveals the newspaper South West. The thirty-something, residing in the town of Mas d’Agenais, in Lot-et-Garonne had been infected while returning from Martinique. The positive diagnosis for the virus had been confirmed by the prefecture and by the regional health agency.
The woman, who would also have been infected with Zika, accompanied her husband to the West Indies. This one is pregnant. Its contamination may be linked to a bite from a tiger mosquito carrying the virus, during the trip to Martinique or even to France (unlikely hypothesis). The woman could also have become infected after having sex with her infected partner.
A mosquito control operation to eliminate infected mosquitoes
To prevent the risk of the virus spreading, a mosquito control operation started on Tuesday in a perimeter of 200 meters around the couple’s residence, where many tiger mosquitoes (Aedes Albopictus) live, reports Sud Ouest. The campaign could continue next week to eliminate all infected tiger mosquitoes.
Zika virus is transmitted from human to human through a bite from the mosquito of the genus Aedes including Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus.
