Less than a month after the appearance of the first case in Martinique, 12 more have been confirmed. The most affected areas are the center of the island, the North Caribbean and the south.
The Zika virus is progressing in Martinique. Less than a month after the confirmation of the 1er cases, 12 others have been confirmed and around 150 suspected cases have been seen in consultation, said the Regional Health Agency (ARS) on Saturday.
According to the last epidemiological point, 3 cases were reported in Schoelcher, 1 in Fort de France, 1 in Lamentin, 5 in Robert, 1 in Saint Luce and 1 in Trinité. “The known mainly impacted areas are the center of Martinique (Foyalaise agglomeration and corresponding Atlantic coast), the North Caribbean and certain municipalities in the South”, specifies the ARS of Martinique.
For the time being, the epidemic phase has not been reached but the ARS calls for vigilance because “the spread of Zika can be avoided if the preventive measures are well applied by all”, she judges. .
Protect yourself from mosquito bites
The Health Agency recalls that the Zika virus is transmitted by mosquitoes of the genus Aedes, which also convey dengue and chikungunya. The destruction of mosquito larvae is one of the major measures put in place. At the same time, it is strongly recommended to respect the actions against mosquito bites, in particular if signs suggestive of the disease appear. Thus, in case of skin rashes with or without fever, red eyes, joint and muscle pain, do not hesitate to consult a doctor.
And although no case of congenital malformation linked to Zika, – like those observed in Brazil – has been reported, the ARS advises pregnant women to protect themselves and ensure that their pregnancy is properly monitored.
