New details have emerged about a massive upgrade Apple has in store for this year’s new iPhone 14. This affects the price.
Earlier we wrote about the new camera of the upcoming iPhone. This one will get a lot better. Now, respected industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has released more details about the new camera hardware. As well as full supply chain information and how much it is likely to add to the phone’s total cost.
iPhone 14 upgrade
As previously reported, the iPhone 14 is expected to upgrade the selfie camera’s standard fixed-focus lens to a high-end autofocus component at a price that’s “risen nearly three times” compared to previous versions. Very good news for us photo makers, but it probably has consequences.
Thanks to Kuo, we now have a better idea where some of this money is going. The new camera will require additional hardware in the form of a voice coil motor (VCM), while the lens itself will be upgraded from the iPhone 13’s current five-element (5P) lens to a six-element (6P) design.
Price
Kuo has tipped Genius Electronic Optical as supplier of the new 6P lens, which itself will cost about 20% more than the current 5P version.
According to Kuo, the full offering should be as follows:
- CMOS Image Sensor – Sony
- Lens: Genius Electronic Optical and Largen Precision Co.
- VCM: Alpen Alpine and Luxshare ICT
- Mobile Camera Module: LG Innotek and Cowell
This new camera will significantly improve selfie and video performance. However, as with any business, the extra costs have to be recouped somewhere. So we have to wait and see whether these significant additional costs are passed on to customers.
