Women are more sensitive to loneliness than men. A Canadian study suggests that women generate stress more easily when they are not surrounded.
The reason why women seek to surround themselves?
Loneliness could be a particularly high stressor for women. This is what suggests a Canadian study recently relayed by the Daily Mail. Women would generate stress when they were alone, and would therefore seek to surround themselves with their friends in these situations.
So far, the conclusions of these researchers at the University of Calgary, Canada, have only been drawn from a rodent experiment, but the established scientific finding could be the same in humans. During their experiment, the researchers isolated several female rodents for 16 to 18 hours. During this time, the female mice generated a stress hormone revealed by analyzes.
Social interaction is vital for many species
At the same time, the male mice which had also been isolated for the experiment, did not show any particular signs of stress.
” Many species, including humans, use social interaction to reduce the effects of stress. Moreover, the absence of a social network can itself be stressful. », Explains Dr Jaideep Bains, main author of this study, for the Daily Mail. ” Recent research suggests that young girls are more susceptible to social stress than boys », He notes again. To confirm the first results of this study, researchers have already announced that an experiment on humans should be carried out.
