The case of textured breast prostheses is now in the hands of justice. As reported France Info and The world, nearly fifteen women seized it on Wednesday 6 and Thursday 7 February. In their sights, the manufacturer of Allergan prostheses now banned in France, but also the National Medicines Safety Agency (ANSM). At the Paris and Marseille public prosecutors’ offices, some file a complaint for “endangering the life of others”, others for “aggravated deception or” unintentional injuries “. While wearing these rough shell implants, they encountered serious health issues.
59 cases of lymphoma in France
The world cites in particular the case of Laeticia, 42 years old, “Today 80% disabled” and that “Connects chemotherapy cures”. In 2007, the patient had Allergan prostheses fitted. Nine years later, pain in her left breast prompted her to consult. Her prosthesis had ruptured, and the silicone spread throughout her body. The implants were removed urgently, but a few weeks later, a LAGC – anaplastic large cell lymphoma – he is diagnosed. According to his lawyer Me Emmanuel Molina, interviewed by the daily, at no time was his client informed of such a risk. To date in France, 59 cases of LAGC including 3 fatal have been counted in ten years by the ASNM.
Auditions days organized by the ANSM
These complaints were filed when the drug gendarme reassessed the safety of these devices. The ANSM is organizing two days of hearings devoted to the use of breast implants in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. A committee of independent experts hears representatives of health authorities, manufacturers, researchers, surgeons and also patients on the subject. The work of this special committee is broadcast live on the agency’s YouTube account.
In France, nearly 500,000 women wear breast prostheses. Textured implants, implicated in the development of cancers, represent 85% of the French market. Last November, the Minister of Health Agnès Buzyn tried to reassure women. Rough-enveloped prostheses would only present “Very little risk”.
