The plastic stored in our shampoo bottles could act as an endocrine disruptor on our body. According to a new Norwegian study, it could even make us gain weight.
- Shampoo bottles contain endocrine disruptors
- Endocrine disruptors act on fat cells
This is an unexpected effect of the products we use to wash our hair: they could contribute to weight gain! Posted in Environmental Science & Technology, research scrutinized 55,000 different chemical compounds found in plastic shampoo bottles and shower gel bottles. Of the 629 substances detected by scientists, eleven are known to be endocrine disruptors.
Among the substances identified, bisphenols and phthalates, endocrine disruptors known because they are present in many plastic products in our daily lives and whose influence on fat cells has been highlighted.
The role of heat and humidity
The fact that these objects are stored in our bathrooms would influence the way in which they are transferred to our body, in particular because of the heat and humidity, believe researchers from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.
“Our study demonstrates that everyday plastics contain potent mixtures of MDCs and therefore may be a relevant but underestimated environmental factor contributing to obesity“, underline the researchers.
Endocrine disruptors affect many body functions: in addition to hormonal dysfunctions, they can also promote cancer or cholesterol.
