Most often harmless, tremors of the eyelids can sometimes require a visit to the doctor if they become disabling.
- Air pollution can also be a factor of fasciculation.
- Certain medications can trigger these eyelid spasms.
They often happen suddenly and uncontrollably: twitching of one or both eyelids – called fasciculation, is not uncommon.
“These are small involuntary muscle spasms and in the case of the eyelid more precisely, a contraction of the orbicularis muscle”, we explain in the podcast Now You Know Health.
Eyelid spasms can have several origins
Several factors favor tremors that can affect one or both eyelids, the upper one as well as the lower one. Fatigue, especially when you spend too much time in front of screens without taking a break, but also stress, which can contract muscles unexpectedly.
Magnesium deficiency can also lead to this disorder. Magnesium is a trace mineral that plays a role in communication between muscles and nerves.
It is possible to relieve tremor of the eyelids
In these cases, the spasms are mild and temporary and can be relieved by drops to moisten dry eyes or pausing a hot towel over the eyes – hot having a soothing effect. It is advisable to perform a small massage of this delicate area and drink mineral water enriched with magnesium or take a break to eat dark chocolate also rich in magnesium.
It is also recommended to reduce the time in front of the screens and to take care of your sleep and your diet by avoiding stimulating substances such as alcohol, tobacco and coffee as much as possible.
Fasciculation can be a symptom of a serious illness
However, this phenomenon should be monitored because it may be associated with nervous system disorders or diseases such as high blood pressure or multiple sclerosis. It may be particularly essential to consult if this settles over several days without interruption or if the pulsations prevent you from closing your eyes.
And if this discomfort is accompanied by language or visual disorders, this is important information to take into account. These could indeed be the first signs of a stroke.
