With a congested nose, pain at the top of the face, sneezing, you are undoubtedly a victim of sinusitis. Acute it disappears in a few days, chronic it does not let go throughout the winter. A visit to the osteopath and a few tips can give you relief.
Inflammation of the sinus lining is manifested by pain in the forehead, jawbones (cheekbones) or around the eyes, headache, runny nose, nasal secretions that flow into the mouth, decreased pain smell and the feeling that the head weighs a ton. Sinusitis, called chronic if it lasts more than three months and recurs several times a year, can have several causes:
- anatomical: a deviation of the nasal septum or a malformation of the sinuses, following a trauma to the face;
- the presence of polyps that develop on the nasal mucosa and congest the sinuses;
- allergies (dust mites, pollens, etc.);
- environmental causes (smoking, pollution, irritating chemicals);
- complications from a viral or bacterial sinus infection;
- but also causes that we know less:
- untreated gastroesophageal reflux disease (mainly in children)
- a badly treated dental infection that lasts: molars and premolars are directly in contact with the sinuses and bacteria creep in;
- chronic stress which creates an immune deficiency and worsens the dryness of the mucous membranes.
Osteopathy to decongest and drain
In addition to drug treatments, the use of an osteopath can often relieve these chronic sinusitis. Laurine Makharine, osteopath in Levallois-Perret explains how: “ With non-invasive manual techniques, we assess the areas of cranial, facial and entire ENT spheres, we check the general mobility of the body, the spine, the spine, and we check that there is no ‘obstacle in the venous and lymphatic return pathways “. The practitioner will normalize the cranial tensions which limit the drainage of the head and the neck, alleviate the cranial tensions and balance the neuro-vegetative system which is often disturbed. In a few sessions, it restores mobility to the body, ensures better ventilation of the respiratory tract and stimulates the good flow of secretions and liquids to re-humidify the mucous membranes of the sinuses. ” Two or three sessions, spaced two weeks apart, are often enough to avoid these repetitive sinusitis, but the treatment will be adapted to each patient. »She announces.
Natural remedies to prevent sinusitis
Beyond these consultations, note some valuable tips to prevent the recurrence or worsening of sinusitis:
- wash your nose daily with salt water to moisten the dry mucous membranes;
- drink tea with lemon juice and honey;
- use essential oils of eucalyptus and peppermint: to inhale (boil in a pot of water and inhale the vapors), to apply to painful areas (2 or 3 drops are enough), or by rubbing on the chest ( mixed with a vegetable oil such as argan oil or avocado oil);
- drink plenty of water (minimum 2 liters per day);
- avoid pollutants, reduce tobacco if you are a smoker.
- avoid acidifying foods like dairy products, and also sugar and fat.
And do not hesitate to have your teeth checked regularly, dental infections are often the cause of acute sinusitis which, if poorly treated, is complicated by chronic sinusitis.
