Pharmacist Sonja Keizers answers
Pharmacist Sonja Keizers answers questions about medicines. This time: what helps against heartburn?
Because I suffer from reflux, I have been taking the antacid omeprazole for some time now. However, my complaints do not go away. Are there other resources I can use?
Answer:
With reflux, some stomach acid rises up into the esophagus. If you are taking a gastric medicine for a long time, it is good to ask yourself whether it is still necessary. Many people use antacids for an unnecessarily long time. This is because it is difficult to stop. The stomach has become accustomed to it and (if the drug is reduced too quickly) will make extra stomach acid. It then seems as if the complaints come back, while it is a temporary reaction. To bridge that period, you can use a simple stomach remedy such as Antagel. Sometimes it helps to raise the head of the bed. Healthy eating and smoking cessation can also reduce reflux. In severe stomach complaints, it is not always possible to stop taking an antacid. Also, antacids may be necessary in combination with other medications.
