Crocs, the famous colored rubber clogs that appeared in 2002, quickly became the summer dress code. Comfortable, light, funny and easy to wash, they have also been adopted by nurses and caregivers in hospitals. However, American podiatrists have just launched an alert in the huffington post : Crocs are not meant to be worn all day and are a hazard to foot health.
“These shoes do not support the heel enough. However, when the heel is unstable, this can cause deformation of the toes as well as tendonitis” says Dr. Alex Kor, president of the American Academy of Podiatry, who regularly sees patients in his office who suffer from foot problems and who admit to wearing fangs every day. “The only people who can benefit from wearing them every day are those who suffer from excessive edema of the legs or ankles. But under no circumstances should you wear crocs for 8-10 hours a day” insists the doctor. “Even children tend to trip more easily when wearing these clogs.“.
This isn’t the first time that crocs have been talked about. A few years ago, hospitals in Sweden, Austria and the UK decided toforbid their nurses to wear these shoes because they are not strong enough to protect the foot from sharp instruments such as syringes or needles.
