The boss of Volkswagen would have confirmed the upcoming marketing of the ID.3 GTX, a sporty electric compact of around 300 hp. This would be more efficient than a Golf GTI, at least under acceleration.
On the sidelines of Volkswagen’s presentations at the Munich Motor Show, Ralf Brandstätter, CEO of the German brand, would have confirmed to British journalists fromAuto Express the development of an ID.3 GTX. A prototype foreshadowing what this sporty version of the electric compact could be, named ID.X, was unveiled last May.

From prototype to series
” The decision has been made. We have the ID.4 GTX, and the ID.3 GTX will come. (…) The ID.X concept had to show what was possible. We had the modular MEB platform at the start; we added all-wheel drive with the GTX. We will add high performance motor on the rear axle (from ID.3, Editor’s note) to give the car better acceleration and more speed. We are preparing an ID.3 GTX; it will materialize “, Would have clearly announced Brandstätter. The latter would nevertheless have excluded a presentation this year.
300 hp for the ID.3 GTX?
The ID.X draws 333 hp from its two engines and weighs 200 kg less than an ID.3 despite a larger battery with a capacity of 82 kWh (77 kWh net). It can thus go from 0 to 100 km / h in 5.3 s according to Volkswagen, better than a Golf GTI Clubsport. Ralf Brandstätter allegedly suggested that these performances would be revised downwards for the ID.3 GTX. The latter should probably take over the powertrain that delivers 299bhp to the ID.4 GTX and, if there is any relief, it should only be symbolic. Before the ID.3, it is the ID.5 electric “coupe” SUV that will be entitled to its GTX variant. In its standard configuration, the ID.5 should be presented in early November 2021.
