In a press releaseThe US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns vinpocetine in women of childbearing age against an ingredient found in certain dietary supplements called vinpocetine. According to the FDA, vinpocetine can cause a miscarriage or harm the development of the fetus.
Food supplements to stimulate memory
Food supplements containing vinpocetine are often marketed to boost memory and focus. Vinpocetine may appear as “vinca extract” or “small periwinkle extract”.
Its toxic effects were measured in rabbits and rats by United States National Institute of Health.
In addition to this consumer warning, the FDA is also asking laboratories that market dietary supplements to put a warning on labels for women who are pregnant or likely to be.
