The use of electronic cigarettes among adolescents could encourage them to switch to traditional cigarettes, according to the results ofa study published in the Journal of the Canadian Medical Association. Vaping, a “cool and fun” gesture teens say, could be a direct route to nicotine addiction.
Researchers conducted a large-scale study with 3,312 adolescents who responded to a questionnaire about smoking and electronic cigarettes to understand why young people vaped and how they related to smoking.
Vaping would lead young people to smoke traditional cigarettes
The findings of the study showed that 10% of young people surveyed have vaped before and the vast majority of adolescents (75%) smoke e-cigarettes because it’s “cool”, fun and new, but certainly not for the sake of it. stop smoking, as do their parents.
In addition, scientists have also found that adolescents are now more likely to vape than to smoke conventional cigarettes.
“The use of e-cigarettes is frequent among adolescents and is associated with socio-demographic characteristics. Engaging in new behaviors seems exciting and perhaps a key motivator for quitting smoking, ”concludes Dr. Michael Khoury, a pediatric cardiologist, author of the study.
“While the teenagers said they were brought up in an environment where smoking was clearly seen as bad for health, this practice, which still mimics the physical gesture of to smoke, could then lead to a trivialization of the classic cigarette ”, fears Doctor Khoury.
This study confirms the conclusions of a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). She says vaping was a risk factor fornicotine addiction and that adolescents who smoke electronic cigarettes are more likely to take up smoking.
