In a survey conducted by the BVA Institute, 43% of vapers admit to smoking at least one cigarette a day. But 58% of these “cumulants” started using electronic cigarettes less than two years ago.
- In a survey conducted by the BVA Institute, two thirds of vapers admit to continuing to smoke cigarettes at least once a day.
- For 68% of them, vaping helped them quit smoking.
- However, 84% of respondents think it is possible to become addicted to electronic cigarettes.
All vapers are not repentant smokers. According to a survey conducted by the BVA polling institute, nearly two thirds of electronic cigarette users continue to smoke tobacco at the same time.
Among the 37% of exclusive vapers in the survey, 34% claim to be former smokers, while 3% of them did not need to smoke cigarettes to start vaping. The switch to vaping remains a recent phenomenon for the majority of respondents, since 58% of them have been using it for less than two years. However, the urge to smoke a cigarette persists in 63% of vapers who consider themselves to be “smoking vapers”, 43% of whom admit to smoking at least one cigarette a day in parallel.
Possibility of e-cigarette addiction
If the survey supports the fact that three quarters of vapers use their electronic cigarette every day, only a third (36%) intend to vape less or even stop vaping in the next 12 months. The electronic cigarette was a way to quit smoking traditional cigarettes for 68% of respondents.
In detail, 36% have stopped smoking for a question of money and 30% have switched to electronic cigarettes because they consider it better for their health than conventional cigarettes. Note, however, that 23% of respondents find vaping as harmful as tobacco and 7% think that electronic cigarettes are more harmful than traditional cigarettes.
Finally, although three quarters of respondents believe that vaping is the most effective way to quit smoking, 84% believe that it is possible to become addicted to electronic cigarettes.
A third of vapers do not use liquid with nicotine while another third manufactures their own “e-liquids”, for the sake of economy in 60% of cases.
According to a barometer from Public Health France dating from 2018, 34.7% of 18-75 year olds have already tried an electronic cigarette and 3.8% already use it daily.
