The end of a ban in force for more than thirty years. The United States gives homosexuals the right to donate blood. The Food and Drugs Agency (FDA) lifted a ban that had been in effect since 1983 and the start of theAIDS epidemic.
Blood donation is possible for homosexuals on one condition: applicants must abstain from sex for one year. “The most precise scientific data available to us justifies this 12-month waiting period in the United States,” Peter Marks, deputy director of the research center of the United States Agency for Drugs and Drug Administration, told AFP. food (FDA).
Before making this decision, the drug agency analyzed “several recent data, studies on epidemiology and reports from other countries having changed their policy on blood donation from homosexuals.”
However, sex workers and people who inject drugs remain excluded from donating blood. People with hemophilia cannot donate blood “because of the danger of the needles used,” the FDA said.
