L’urinary incontinence would be a real marker of chronic diseases and precisely ofhypertension, ofhypercholesterolemia and pulmonary diseases, in particularasthma, according to results of a study published in the British Journal of Urology (BJU) International.
Researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham conducted research with 3,800 women with urinary incontinence who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys studies, conducted from 2005-06 to 2011-12 to understand s There was a link between 12 chronic conditions and the type and severity of urinary incontinence.
Urinary incontinence, a marker of chronic and heart disease
The results of the study showed that only 11% of women did not have other chronic disease problems.
In contrast, depending on the severity of urinary incontinence, researchers observed the prevalence of four types of chronic disease.
In incontinent volunteers who had at least one chronic condition, 4 subgroups were noted: women with cardiovascular risk recent, participants at older cardiovascular risk, asthmatics and those with multiple chronic diseases.
The researchers found that compared to incontinence women without chronic disease, women in the recent cardiovascular risk group had a higher risk of stress incontinence and mild incontinence. Those with asthma have a higher risk of stress incontinence and their incontinence severity.
Women with longstanding cardiovascular risk had higher rates of urge incontinence (characterized by involuntary leakage of urine, accompanied or immediately preceded by an urgent and irrepressible urge to urinate), and generally more severe incontinence.
“A diagnosis of incontinence should encourage prevention and research the existence of these conditions, sometimes modifiable”, conclude the authors of the study.
