A disease that does not say its name is rampant in Liberia. For good reason, no one knows what this strange pathology is which has already caused at least twelve deaths since Sunday, April 23, according to local authorities in Monrovia, the capital of Liberia. Powerlessness and concern are growing both among the health authorities and among the population, among whom memories of the Ebola epidemica year ago, are still alive.
Patients affected by this disease present the same symptoms, namely fever and vomiting. The first patients were located in the province of Sinoe, in the south-east of Liberia, recalls AFP.
Samples taken from the patients were sent to Atlanta in the United States to the American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to learn more about this disease. Ebola virus and Lassa fever virus tests were negative.
One year since the end of Ebola
Liberia is one of three countries, along with Guinea and Sierra Leone, hit by the Ebola outbreak. Although the end of the epidemic was announced in June 2016 (with the end of cases of transmission of the virus), it will have left behind a sad toll in these three affected countries in West Africa: 11,300 deaths for 28,000 recorded cases.
