Two studies, Swedish and American, have just shown the positive effects of the bypass on adolescents. Even several years after the intervention, a sharp decrease in the body mass index of patients is observed.
Patients regain weight, but their BMI remains reduced over time
The effectiveness of gastric bypass has already been proven time and time again and by numerous scientific studies. In two joint publications, published in the journal The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, researchers have just demonstrated the very encouraging results of this surgical technique, in the reduction of body mass index (BMI) of several patients aged 13 to 21 years.
A first study was conducted in the United States and involved 58 patients with a mean baseline BMI of 58.5. One year after the surgery, it was reduced to 36. Eight years after the reduction in the size of the stomachs of these patients, all had gained weight, but their BMI had stabilized at 42. The doctors however, were able to observe a 30% drop in their initial weight.
Significantly reduced hypertension, diabetes and cholesterol in many patients
The second study focused on the cases of 81 Swedish patients. Their baseline BMI, before surgery, was around 43. Five years after their operation, the teens all showed 28% weight loss.
Very positive results for this technique which, in addition to a reduction in the body mass index of the adolescents studied, significantly reduced the morbid consequences of obesity in these patients. The American study showed that the percentage of diabetics had fallen from 16% to 2%. Patients with cholesterol were 38% after surgery, up from 86% previously, while doctors had 16% of adolescents with hypertension, up from 47% at the start of the study.
