Eliminating trans fatty acids from your diet would reduce the risk of early mortality from all diseases (heart disease, neurodegenerative And cancer), according to the results of a study published in the medical journal JAMA Internal Medicine.
Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health in the United States carried out a study with 126,000 participants over 32 years. The volunteers completed a questionnaire about their diet and lifestyle every two and four years. Throughout the study, they declared their state of health. More than 33,300 deaths have been recorded.
Trans fatty acids, a public health risk
The results of this study showed that trans fatty acids (present in processed food and soon removed from these compositions) had a serious impact on health, increasing the risk of early mortality by 16%.
The scientists also observed that a 5% increase in saturated fat consumption was linked to an 8% increase in premature mortality. On the other hand, a high consumption of unsaturated fats reduced the risk of dying prematurely from 11% to 19%.
Change your diet to reduce the risk of premature death
Replace only 5%, about 15 grams, of the calories consumed from saturated fat with unsaturated fatty acids likeolive oilreduced the risk of premature death by 27%.
This simple modification has made it possible in 32 years to reduce the risk of dying early from cardiovascular illnessescancers and neurodegenerative pathologies such as Alzheimer’s Or Parkinson’s.
“This study highlights the important benefits of unsaturated fats, especially when they replace saturated fats and trans fatty acids,” said Dong Wang, researcher at Harvard School of Public Health and lead author of the work.
