This is the fourth revision of the price of tobacco since the arrival of the Macron government in May 2017. As of July 2, some packs of cigarettes will experience an increase in their price. This measure, set out in a decree dated June 7 and published on Saturday 9 in the Official Journal, concerns the packages which have the lowest prices on the current French market.
The decree, signed by the Director General of Health and the Director General of Customs and Indirect Rights, therefore targets brands whose package price still remained around 7.50 euros after the last increase on May 1. These packages will increase to 7.70 or 7.80 euros.
A drop of one million smokers in 2017
The Marlboro Red package (Philipp Morris group), which has already fallen from 7.30 to 8 euros since March 1, will keep this price. Ditto for the Camel Filters package which will remain at 7.90 euros. The package of Benson and Hedges Original Red will meanwhile go from 7.50 euros to 7.80 euros. That of Winston Connect Blue goes from 7.60 euros to 7.70 euros. Both brands (as well as Camel) are marketed by the Japan Tobacco group.
The government has planned a series of successive increases to reach a package of 10 euros by November 2020. On May 28, Agnès Buzyn, Minister of Health, attributed to this increase in prices and to electronic cigarettes the decline of one million in the number of smokers registered in 2017, as AFP recalls.
