I suffer from a spasmodic bowel and should really drink more, but I can’t. I drink about two mugs of tea, three to four cups of coffee and water in between a day, but I get really sick if I drink more than I normally do. I then become nauseous, often with vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhoea. Can you tell me what could be causing this?

I do not have a real medical explanation in the sense of an abnormality in the gastrointestinal tract, but the gastrointestinal tract always reacts strongly to tension and stress.
If you can’t tolerate drinking water well, I actually suspect that you have a lot of tension complaints, which also somewhat corresponds to your colon complaints: a spastic intestine is common in people who easily get physical complaints when stressed.
A remedy for depression could help – that makes it a bit more ‘stress resistant’ – but of course I can’t judge it very well on the basis of an e-mail of a few lines. Please discuss it with your doctor.
