December 21, 2018.
The end of the year celebrations often rhyme with fatigue, stress, emotions. For the elderly or the most fragile, be careful! The number of heart attacks increases on December 24 and January 1.
Festivities dangerous to the heart
A study published on December 12 in the British Medical Journal and conducted by researchers from the universities of Stockholm, Uppsala, Lund and Orebro, closely monitored fluctuations in the number of heart attacks during the holiday season. They noted peaks during this period and more especially on December 24 and on New Year’s Eve on January 1.
In figures, we can even know precisely thataround 10 p.m. on December 24 the peak of the year is reached. Of the 283,000 patients admitted to hospital for a heart attack (between 1998 and 2013), the number of heart attacks increased by 37% on December 24 and 20% on January 1.
Take care of the most fragile
If we consider the stress, the emotions experienced during these good family moments and the harshness of the winter cold combined with the fatigue of these extended days and these heavy, fatty and watered meals, no wonder the elderly or those with a more fragile heart feel the effects directly.
In case of symptoms – pain in the chest that radiates to the left arm the jaw or back, dizziness, faintness, vomiting, nausea – do not delay, and contact directly on 15.
