The first men had brown eyes: blue eyes came much later in the history of evolution. And they shouldn’t go away.
Brown-eyed parents can have blue-eyed children
Cro-Magnon, and all other hominids up to modern man, had brown eyes, it is now a scientifically established fact. Why ? Because the genetic mutation at the origin of blue eyes only appeared in Europe, then in the Middle East, 10,000 years ago! A mutation which then spread in the population.
Interestingly enough, you may well be a carrier of the blue eye gene, while still having brown eyes … But your children may have blue eyes! Normal: the gene for brown eyes masks the gene for blue eyes when it is expressed. To have blue eyes, the one with brown eyes must be absent! It’s just like with redheads. A red-haired child can appear in a family, because the gene that gives this characteristic color to the hair and skin of those who carry it can be transmitted by parents who also carry it, but in whom it is not expressed, that is, “not active”.
No the blue eyes won’t go away
As a result of the races, blue eyes are not intended to disappear, as an article in the Figaro Health who asked the geneticists question. In fact, the number of people with blue eyes remains stable in the world population. In France, 30% of the inhabitants have blue eyes. In some Nordic countries, this percentage greatly exceeds three-quarters of the population! What can happen is a change in the percentage of blue-eyed inhabitants in a given country, depending on migration and population mixing. On the other hand, in countries where blue eyes are over-represented, statistically, they have no risk of disappearing … nor of becoming the norm, however!
